virgin america

just bought my first plane ticket to fly them!!  i'm so excited!  granted it's not a very long flight, it's only from dallas to los angeles for memorial day weekend, but still, it's going to be awesome.  one way is an aisle seat, the other is a window seat, so i can get the full experience.  call me silly, but i have been wanting to fly virgin america since they were invented.  yay grown up job!  now hopefully i can make sure i have off work that saturday...

trip 1 of 2012 - flights purchased.

one year from ireland

today is march 10th.  a year ago today, i left on a plane for ireland.  it was my last spring break in college so i wanted to really make it count.  my brother had just gotten there for study abroad so i figured what better way to do spring break than to hang out with jason overseas.  so my cousin mary and i bought tickets and flew to dublin to spend 10 wonderful days in the republic of ireland.  we saw dublin, galway, killarney, and cork.  spent st patrick's day in dublin, surfed with two great couchsurfing hosts, kissed the blarney stone upside down, touched beautiful castles, drank guiness at the guiness storehouse, watched a rugby match in a pub (and not just any match, the england v ireland six nations game mind you), ate blood pudding...and liked it, climbed up to the cliffs of moher, took pictures with two different random groups of kappa deltas, and walked in the irish rain with our backpacks, just to name a few of the memories.

but the best and worst part of the trip was something incurable that i caught over there - a little thing called the travel bug.  backpacking for the first time showed me how much i loved everything about it.  making friends anywhere and everywhere, only having a few belongings to keep track of, having the ability to stand out or blend in depending on which i preferred, learning a new culture, and feeling so incredibly free.  and yet having a grown up job allows me so little opportunity to travel often, which leaves me constantly aching for more.  absence does make the heart grow fonder, because it will make me relish each moment i am abroad in the future.

so here's to all the people that made that first trip what it was
-my first travel partner, my cousin mary
-my brother, jason, who i followed the lead of and just went for it
-the id kids that i finally met and fell in love with - danny, sarah, robert, austin
-our philly girl, isabelle
-my galway guys, cillian and johnny
-our dublin rugby pub partner, darron
-our emergency cork host, yvonne, one of the sweetest girls i've ever met
-my aggie host, hunter, who i've had the privilege of seeing a few times again since the first
-name twin, sarah, for getting to have a good friend to celebrate with
-and anyone i may have missed that shared our journey with us

happy first travel anniversary to me

cheers

uganda

no, i did not add uganda to my list of travels 2012.  HOWEVER, one of my closest and longest friends (seriously, we've been together since the 6th grade...since 1997) is trying to go to Uganda.

janelle has been working with Invisible Children and Resolve for 6 years.  one of the huge accomplishments she has made was to get a bill passed to stop violence around africa.  as part of the initiative to get this bill passed, she was one of the organizers of "Coburn Say Yes", which was super successful.  you can read all about this peace-seeking bill here.  and if you look close you can find even her in a few of the pics on both sites.

if you have any questions about her mission, email her at hope4afrika@yahoo.com.  i know she is always ready and willing to share her passion for these people.  it's even easier to connect with her on twitter, at twitter.com/hope4afrika.

please please please help donate so she can go back to UGANDA.  this is what life is all about, helping others.  this is not just a pet project for her, this is janelle's whole world.
